RST 280

Group Project Essay & Presentation Guidelines

1. Group Essays due on class list between October 20 - 22, 2000
Each essay is to have a title, the original name the group has given itself, the list of participating
group members, and the essay itself (with any web sites, references, footnotes, bibliography, etc.).

The length of the essay is to be between 1250 - 1500 words.

Each group's project topic is due to the mentor no later than Oct. 5th.

2. RULE OF EXCOMMUNICATION:
This group work is to be enjoyable as well as valuable and that requires the full participation of ALL
      members of the group.

Each group has the power to excommunicate a member who does not really participate equally with
the others. The mentor's final approval for the excommunication is needed. Any excommunicants will
receive a "0" for the Project.

3. Presentations begin on Tuesday, October 24th, with each group to give a presentation of 20 minutes,
not much briefer nor much longer. There will be a time for the class to ask questions or make comments
to the presenting group following each presentation. Presentations will also take place on October 26th.

In order to have a topical sequence to the order of presentations, they will be as follows:

            Tuesday, Oct. 24:        Groups

            Thursday, Oct. 26:       Groups

The essay and the presentation are encouraged to be both critical and creative, with enjoyment in the doing
of it all.  Presentations can be via the showing of an original video tape the group has made, a dramatic
enactment, role-playing, etc.

     * A presentation that is merely a reading of the group's essay or a reading from notes by group members
will not be considered to have fulfilled the minimum requirements for the presentation..

4. RELATION BETWEEN THE ESSAY AND THE PRESENTATION
The essay is to be an introductory look at the group's topic, explaining the essentials to the class via
each posted essay.  The presentation is NOT to be simply a rehash of  the essay, not a reading of it,
but an additional step beyond the essay to explain further, or enact the meaning of the topic.

In other words, the essay is to serve as an introduction to the presentation and the presentation
is to serve as a conclusion to the essay. They are to be two separate, but connected aspects of one project.

5 . No class on  Tuesday Oct. 3rd and  Thursday, Oct. 19th, so that each group can have times when all
members can meet, whether in HH 445 or elsewhere.

6. POST-PRESENTATION ESSAY
Everyone is to write a 300 word essay as a necessary part of this project that is to be sent to the
mentor's email address only, not to the class list, between Oct. 26 - 27 (no later than Oct. 27th).
This essay is only to be written and sent AFTER one's group has completed its class presentation
so that the whole project can be reviewed.  This essay is to address the following:

Explain your participation in and evaluation of this collaborative project, from its
beginning through the presentation.  Did it go well, or not?  Why?  What were the
negatives and positives of your experience?   And, evaluate the participation of
the group (including any lack of participation).
