QUIZ # 2: BSCW

This quiz is set up to ensure you are able to use the BSCW. Please conplete each of the assigned tasks by Friday, January 19th. Use the help files to guide you through the assignments. If you find an error in any of the help fliles please contact Fr. Bucko with suggestions for suitable corrections or amplifications.

Task 1: Biographical Data: Fill in all relevant biographical data in the BSCW. Note that only members of the class can see this material. This will allow myself and member of the class to contact you if necessary. Please do not change your e-mail address on the form as the form will not process. (Help File)

Task 2: Configure Daily Report: The BSCW will send you e-mail every day at 5 AM to report on workspace activity. This allows you to keep up on course activity without first signing onto the workspace. When relevant matter has been published on the BSCW you can then go to the workspace to see it. This is a feature well worth activating. (Help File)

Task 3: Change Your Password: Please change your password and write it down in a secure place. BSCW passwords, like user names, are case sensitive. (Help File). If you forget your password the BSCW will allow you to create a new one (Help File). You will need to use your official Creighton E-Mail address (the one that looks like rab41531@creighton.edu - your initials then five numbers) to retrieve your password and user name. Check with your professor if you did not write this down in a secure place. While looking in that secure place see if you also put your password there!

Task 4: Edit Your Preferences: BSCW gives you a few options for configurations. In this task you want to change your e-mail type to HTML if you have a mail client that is HTML capable (if you see formatted text, color, or images in your messages you are using a HTML capable client). You sould also set your User Profile to EXPERT. Please refer to the help page (Help File) for this task as it can be a bit tricky!

Task 5: Create a URL: Adding links to the BSCW is an approrpiate form of active class participation. In this quiz you are required to surf the net for a web site relevant to the study of anthropology. When you find a suitable site you will add it to the quiz folder by using the BSCW "Add URL" utility (Help File). Be sure to rate the page and to include the URL! You can surf your way to the quiz folder from the BSCW Portal or you may go directly to the folder using this link. When using direct links to the BSCW you will always be asked for your user name and password. You might want to use multiple browsers for this task, one for the BSCW and one for surfing the net (Help File). You can then cut and paste the URL between browsers.

Task 6: Discuss Why Ethnohsitory is Important: The BSCW can be used for discussion. While much of this function for general conversation will be carried out on the listserv some graded discussions will take place on the BSCW. You can surf your way to the quiz folder from the BSCW Portal or you may go directly to the folder using this link. After you open the appropriate folder you will use the BSCW "DISCUSSION" utility (Help File). You will need to initiate your own discussion (use the discussion button) and reply to at least one other person's statement (Help File) to successfully complete this part of the quiz.
