Religion 166: Mid-term Exam

Each student may choose one question from each group. Each of questions will be valued at 33 points.

Group A:

1. Compare and contrast the motives of the Puritans and Spanish in settling North America.

2. Discuss Puritan Theology with respect to its origin, content, its influence upon society, its decline in the popular estimate, and the extent of its continuing influence in American culture.

3. Describe the significance of Roger Williams.

Group B:

1. Compare Unitarianism, Transcendentalism, and Christian Science with respect to origin, essence and effect.

2. Describe the chiasmas in American religious history. What role, if any, did this development play in shaping the secular history of the United States.

3. Describe the benevolent empire, and the reaction to it.

Group C:

1. Describe the ways the Frontier helped to shape and mold American religious life.

2. Describe what the forces that shaped American religious life during the Revolutionary War, and with particular reference to those that helped give rise to the idea of religious freedom.

3. Discuss the two Great Awakenings. How were they alike, and how did they differ.
