Problem of Evil: Course Objectives

The first and ultimate objective of this course is that you recognize the problem of evil as a problem. This means that the various course materials are intended not to resolve, but to highlight the magnitude of the problem of evil and suffering, together with the complexities of the human responses to this problem. Accordingly, the class will critically reflect on the problem not only as it pertains to philosophy and the question of theodicy, but also as it manifests itself historically in culture, literature and theology.

In order to accomplish and assess this objective, the student will be required to attend class regularly and participate in class discussion. Attendance and participation will be assessed by occasional unannounced reading quizes which will be given at the beginning of classes, and also through occasional daily assignments which will consist of bringing to class a written paragraph on the reading together with 2-3 questions for discussion. The student will be held responsible for any assignments announced or quizzes given when absent.
