A careful reading of the text of Matthew's Gospel focusing on Matthew's
distinctive interests. Our foci will include the structure and purpose of the gospel, the relationship of the writer and his community to Judaism, and the gospel's portrayals of Jesus, discipleship, and Christian community.
The specific goals of the course are:
- to become familiar with the contours of Matthew's Gospel and Matthew's theology and to gain a knowledge of the social world within which Matthew's Gospel was written
- to gain skill and confidence in understanding and interpreting the text of Matthew's Gospel
- to facilitate the application of the text to various theological and pastoral situations in our own day.
