First Term Writing Assignments

Critical Responses

As noted in the syllabus, these assignments do not need to be overly formal in style. What is of most interest to me is the degree to which you've thought about the topics below. The papers need only be about two pages long (double-spaced), and if you can, try not to write more than three pages. Again, they will not be accepted late, but if you have a documented excuse alternate arrangements will be made.

And the topics are (drumroll please):

First Essay

Due: Nov 11
Late penalty: 1% per day
Length: Approx. 1700 words (maximum 6 pages double-spaced)

This is a formal essay, but it is not a research paper. This means that your work must follow standard essay form, but it should not contain references to any secondary research materials. I will be reviewing what I consider to be acceptable essay form in an early tutorial, as well as handing out a short writing guide. The topic is as follows:

Identify and analyze what seems to you to be religious in Alice Walker's story, "Everyday Use." In your discussion, consder what relation(s) might exist between religion and the title of the story.
