Translations of the Dhammapada
Buddharakkita Translation (Phil 103 students should read this text and should make use of the commentary on the highlighted words and phrases. You may certainly look at the second translation below if you want to compare translations.)
Regard to the first verse of Chapter Two the word "mindfulness" is the best translation and "the deathless" is very misleading, although it is explained in the note. The phrase means the state of Nirvana (Nibbana in the Pali language), which is the feeling of complete peace and freedom that comes from overcoming excessive attachment and craving. It happens in this life, not in some afterlife.
In verse 15 of Chapter One "hereafter" simply means the next life in the cycle of life according to the law of karma and reincarnation.
